Every serious network marketer, whether newbie or veteran, is in a constant lookout for good sources of leads and prospects. The problem though, is that there are a variety of lead generation methods out there, and it is difficult to determine which ones work and which don't. In an effort to gain more business, some entrepreneurs resort to buying MLM genealogy lead lists. But the question remains, is this a good method for getting excited new prospects or is it a total waste of time?
A genealogy list, also known as a genealogy report, is a database of names, phone numbers, and email addresses of people who are either active network marketers, or have been in an MLM opportunity in the past. Some trainers teach that acquiring this type of list is a smart business move because the people listed there are already familiar with the concept of network marketing.
My position is, these lists of active network marketers can both be good or bad for you. It is good if it is acquired with complete permission from the leads themselves. When they originally signed up to an opt-in page, website, or direct mail coupon, they should have been made aware that their contact information will also be made available to other marketers. Otherwise, if you directly contact these "leads" that you bought, they have the tendency to resist your marketing message because they never manually subscribed to you in the first place!
The rule of thumb is this: If you decide to buy a genealogy report, make sure you avoid sending unsolicited marketing emails to them. You are not allowed to send them a commercial message out cold. Instead, you can simply give them a call or send a postcard to their house (if you can handle that).
The bad thing about lead lists sold online is that many of them are rehashed, recycled, and resold lists that have already been used by thousands of other people before you. Don't get fooled by cheap lists that are being sold in the black market...they can be a nightmare for your pocket, and they yield very little results.
Instead of going out of your way buying MLM genealogy lead lists, choose a more classy way to run your business and get excited prospects. The better way is to learn how to generate your own leads. In short, build your own list and market to them constantly with their permission. While it may not be easy to go out on your own and acquire new prospects, it is ever rewarding and lucrative if you want to build a booming downline and long lasting residual income.
